Abstract
Within the last 40 years the development of secondary steel making processes has shown the increasing demand for the production of high and higher quality steel grades. Besides the various techniques nowadays available for the upgrading of steel also the refractory material has established its key role as a paramount factor influencing the yield of different production units in the secondary metallurgy. Among these refractories, dolomitic materials have turned out to be most suitable for the metallurgical targets, which is shown from practical experience in steel plants as well as from laboratory tests and theoretical investigations. In this respect main refractory products are compared to each other. Examples are shown for lowest possible oxygen levels in the steel regarding various refractory materials. Desulphurisation efficiency has proved to be higher when using dolomite refractories instead of Al-based linings. Non metallic inclusions - mainly oxides from the system Al2O3 and SiO2 - can be drastically reduced by means of a dolomite lining. The preconditions for an optimum use of dolomite are discussed together with limitations concerning particular operating conditions and existing infrastructures in the steel plant. Other aspects like energy savings from the use of dolomite in ladle furnaces can contribute as well to a successful operation with this type of refractory material.
