Abstract
The application of high-pressure roller press comminution in pelletizing industries is a recent development. The roller press crushing process has high efficiency and low electricity consumption when compared with ball mill grinding. In 2003, Samarco Mineração S/A had two high-pressure roller presses installed, aiming to regrind the product of the ball mill. The concentrate is produced with higher granulometry, which reduces the energy consumption specific to grinding due to high productivity levels. After filtration, the material is put through the roller press in order to increase its specific surface area and give it the appropriate characteristics for the agglomeration step. A preliminary evaluation of this agglomeration step was conducted laboratorially on a pilot disc, aiming to start up operation of the industrial presses. During the evaluation, a different behavior of the material was detected, in comparison with that of the pellet feed from the ball mills. The study carried out made it possible to adjust the industrial process to absorb the influences of the pellet feed granulometry on the agglomeration (pelletizing) step and, consequently, on the physical quality of unfired pellets.
