Abstract

The introduction of tundish turbulence suppression systems made a significant advance in the ability to improve steel quality by increasing the minimum residence time and reducing the oxygen pickup at ladle change or at ladle change or non-steady state casting. Simultaneously, it has been possible to increase steel yield by reducing the amount of transition steel produced during grade change practices and reducing the size of steel skull left after casting. New advances developed out of water and math modeling of various tundish designs have led to a synergistic approach to flow control in the tundish. Under this new regime, modifications have been made also to the tundish cavity yielding significant cost savings to the steelmakers adopting these new technologies. Examples of savings at some of the early adopters of the technology are described.
