Abstract
Over the past ten years, the steel industry has seen an impressive array of new technologies. VAI/Fuchs is leading the Electric Steelmakers into technologies focused on improving the productivity, profitability and environmental aspects of its process and the quality and range of products. Finger Shaft Furnace Technology developed since 1989 by FUCHS Systemtechnik gains increasing interest in Electric Steelmaking, owing to its environment friendly integrated scrap preheating in the shaft. AC- and DC-technology is applicable and proven in more than 28 Finger Shaft Furnaces worldwide in operation or under contract. The Finger Shaft Furnace proofs one of the most economic melting processes, with flexibility on charging options (scrap, DRI/HBI, hot metal) and reduced dust and gas emissions. This paper presents in more details these technologies as a 600,000 t/a plant with state-of-the-art steelmaking and continuous casting facilities that was started up in March 2000 by VAI at Adabia in Egypt for the production of billets. Contractual guarantees were exceeded during the performance tests of the Finger Shaft Furnace and 5-strand billet caster. A total of 5,600 tons of billets were cast in 64 hours, corresponding to a casting speed of over 4.3 m/min.
