Abstract

Prebaked electrodes are utilised in electrical arc furnace since the last century. Such electrodes are made of carbon which offers excellent characteristics for the conduction of electrical currents, and resistance against high temperatures and wear by oxydation. The chemical and physical properties of prebaked electrodes are discussed, and manufacturing, transport, handling, assembly, and utilisation in the Silicon Metal process are analysed. Special emphasis is given to the problem of electrode failures, and to standard practices to be adopted for improving electrode performance, and reduce electrode cost.
