Abstract

A new flat rolling mill facility based on a single stand Steckel mill is introduced. Both roughing and finishing are carried out by the same mill stand and up to 800,000 t/y of high quality coils can be produced at low cost. The mill is well suited for rolling ultra-low and low carbon steel grades, HSLA grades, as well as pipe steels. With minor modifications, stainless steel can also be rolled in this mill type. An increase in total mill capacity to 1.3 million tons per year is possible with the installation of a second Steckel mill stand in a 2-stand tandem configuration. VAI has already signed its first contract for a single Steckel mill facility, which will be supplied to a producer in the Asian market region.
