Abstract
The Coilbox has seen a number of technological developments since the fírst production unit started up in Austraiia in 1978. Coilbox perfonnance continues to reach higher levels to meet the requirements of today's global steel industry. The Coilbox is a vital process in all types of hot strip mills from the traditional continuous or semi-continuous mills to mini-mills and end-less rolling mills. The future of the Coilbox Technology will continue to assist the global steel industry to become more cost and quality conscious well into the future. This paper will describe evolution of the Coilbox Technology from a concept into one of the most widely applied and flexible processes available in hot strip rolling. Operating limitations of earlier applications have been continually relieved to meet the demands of steel producers. The modem Coilbox can operate at high speeds with exceptional stability and reliability to provide uniform temperature over the full transfer bar. Design and process developments have focused on improved operability, enhanced product quality, reduced cost and improved maintainability. Equipment features discussed include basic Coilbox design, plant layout, mandrel-less coil transfer, thermal shields and coil reheat hace. Many of these features can be retrofitted into older units in a cost efficient manner.
