Abstract

The new VAI-CON® Stopper system developed by VOEST-ALPINE Industrieanlagenbau GmbH & Co (VAI) is a modularly designed solution for reducing slag carry-over in converter steelmaking. Its development is the result of many years of engineering and operational experience in close cooperation with steel producers. The system and the accompanying quick-change equipment reduce maintenance downtime to less than one hour in every 500 heats. Long-term availability, low operating costs and automatic operation mean that the VAI-CON® Stopper is highly superior to other slag-reduction systems. The ever greater demand for higher steel qualities poses challenges for metallurgists as well as equipment designers. One of the most important steps they have taken to improve steel quality produced in converters has been to minimize slag carry-over during tapping from the converter vessel into the teeming ladle. The previously well-known slag-stopping system developed, designed and engineered by VAI has now been replaced by the state-of-the-art VAI-CON® Stopper. Comprehensive experience in converter steelmaking and various requests from customers have led to a definition of the most important parameters required by such a system: Reduction of the slag carry-over to the highest technically feasible degree; Optimized quick-change procedure directly on the converter; Significant reduction of system maintenance down-time. These goals led to the design of a new and advanced version of the VAI slag-stopping system, which uses a sophisticated computer program to reduce the total amount of slag carry-over to decreased quantities never before attained. The specific main benefits of the newly designed VAI-CON® Stopper are: Slag carry-over of less than 2 kg/t liquid steel with the desired metallurgical effects; Service life of more than 5000 heats; Changing time of less than one hour; Improved heat resistance in all mechanical parts.
