Abstract
The paper discusses the economic and technical revival of the steel industry, highlighting global growth in crude steel production and the increasing demand driven particularly by China. It analyzes the evolution of the European steel industry, including productivity gains, restructuring, and technological advancements. The role of blast furnace technology, raw material availability, coke production, and alternative routes such as direct reduction and smelting reduction are examined. Technological developments such as thin slab casting, strip casting, and automation improvements are presented as key drivers of efficiency. The study also addresses constraints such as limited scrap availability and increasing raw material costs. Additionally, political and environmental challenges, particularly CO₂ emission regulations and their impact on competitiveness in Europe, are discussed. Finally, the paper highlights industry initiatives to improve the public image of steel and concludes that adapting to economic, technological, and political “winds of change” is essential for the sustainability of the steel industry.
