Abstract

A comprehensive model based on transport phenomena able to simulate the tundish filling and casting operation is presented. The model takes into account simultaneously the liquid flow, heat transfer and particles motions comprising the liquid region, covering layer and refractories. The transient calculations are carried out into the 3D geometry of the tundish with non-symmetric positioning of 3 casting veins. The effects of three different candidate materials to be used as covering layer were investigated. The results indicated that it is possible to obtain stables and uniform temperatures distributions with small thermal gradients depending on the thickness and thermophysical properties of the materials used as covering layer. Based on the analysis around 20% of the covering layers materials could be reduced and hence positively impact on the energy consumption and the carbon footprint of the continuous casting process of the integrated steelmaking route
