Abstract

Nowadays, the industrial process has not only the purpose of maximizing the productivity and quality but also minimize the environmental load. Although the steelmaking industries contributes significantly to the total emission, the investigators have directed efforts in order to better understand and control the process, which leads to develop techniques of control and minimize the total emissions. In the integrated steelmaking plant the sintering process plays an important role furnishing raw material to the blast furnace. However, the sinter process is known as one of the most pollutant process in this chain, therefore special attention has been devoted to this process aiming the environmental control. Among the several gases and particulates emitted by the sinter plant the so called dioxins and furans are of the great interest because of their toxicity. In this work, a computational simulation of the sinter process was developed able to estimate or predicts the dioxin and furans generated within the sinter bed. The model is based on the multi phase concept with multiple components described by conservation equations of each component. The results of simulations has shown that the dioxin and furans are formed at low temperatures, as commonly encountered in the literature.
