Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the application of the severe plastic deformation method Accumulative Roll-Bonding (ARB) in the production of ultrafine grains in an aluminum alloy, seeking to improve its mechanical properties without altering its chemical composition. The methodology involved the preparation of samples annealed at 500 °C for 2 hours and the simulation of ARB through rolling. The process consisted of sanding, cleaning with acetone, and stacking two sheets for pressure bonding, subjected to successive reductions of 50% in thickness per pass, totaling five passes. Microstructural characterization was based on metallography and grain size measurements using the ImageJ software. The results will indicate that the accumulation of strain promotes profound microstructural modification; the high efficiency of dynamic recovery in aluminum allows the rearrangement of dislocations and the evolution of subgrains into high-angle grain boundaries. It is concluded that the ARB simulation is fully effective in consolidating ultrafine grain refinement, significantly increasing the boundary area that acts as a barrier. According to the Hall-Petch relationship, this structural alteration guarantees the alloy a significant and simultaneous increase in its yield strength and hardness.
