Abstract
The continuous casting machine located in SIDERAR was manufactured by CONCAST-SMS in October of 1984. The before mentioned start-up metallurgical length was 19.662 mm, and it had 12 operative segments. The maximum speed respect to casting was 1.2 m/min and the average monthly production was 60.000 TN/month. Both structural and equipment design allowed metallurgical length to be increased by means of two more segments in the future. Due to the re-conversion of siderurgical industry in Argentina in the year 1993, SIDERAR incorporated the latest existing technology. This technology, together with the increasing steel demand in the local market as well as in the international market, brought about that in August of the year 1998, the foreseen segments had to be added to the original design with the aim of increasing the casting speed. Consequently, the new length to support was 22.062 mm and had 14 operative segments. The maximum speed respect to casting was 1.7 m/min and the average monthly production was 195.000 TN/month. During the first semester of the year 2002, a strong demand respect to steel took place in the international market, so SIDERAR ran all the plant units at maximum operation, being the continuous casting machine of roughdressing (CCD) its “bottleneck”. The only possible alternative in order to increase again the CCD production was by means of a new increasing casting speed. This was possible through another Metallurgical length increase (Segment 15) and by means of enlarging the cooling system. In the year 2002, SIDERAR approved a U$S 550.000 investment in order to incorporate the segment 15. Such start-up was carried out in January of the year 2003. The maximum casting speed that was achieved for low carbon steel was 1,85 m/min, with a production record of 230.000 TN/month, equivalent to 2.500.000 TN/year. The work hereby explains all the steps in order to achieve the new metallurgical length as regards 23.262 mm, and in particular, the incorporation of the segment 15 within a totally compressed environment and a physically boundary set, and with an execution term of only six months
