Abstract

Future ironmaking in North America will take 3 forms: the blast furnace, direct reduction, and smelting reduction. The blast furnace will be dominant, but its production will fall 15–20% by 2015. Total iron production will fall about 10–15%. Direct reduction and smelting reduction will experience some, but not significant growth. Trends and issues concerning all 3 processes are discussed along with evaluation of their individual impacts. Progress on some specific new ironmaking processes such as the Iron Dynamics Process and the ITmk3 Process will be reviewed. The iron ore aspects will also be discussed including QCM’s role in supplying iron ore to all three sectors. This paper is an update of a paper presented at ICSTI’03, in Dusseldorf, June, 2003.
