Abstract
Increase in productivity for billet casters is the primary focus of almost all new developments in the area of continuous casting. This is achieved by not only increasing the casting speeds but by also increasing the reliability of the casters via proven equipment designs. In this paper, VAI’s (VOEST-ALPINE Industrieanlagenbau) technological recommendation for High Speed Billet Casting is presented. Its core equipment includes the DIAMOLD, a mold with an optimized taper and DYNAFLEX oscillator consisting of a wear free guidance system and dynamically adjustable hydraulic drive. The design of the DIAMOLD is based on a thermo-mechanical model of the steel solidification process in the mold, the temperature and of the strand shell and the thermal expansion of the copper mold is determined. In VAI's DYNAFLEX oscillator both, a hydraulic or an electromechanical drive can be used. A hydraulic drive provides the optimum surface quality and features dynamic and on line adjustment of frequency, stroke, and wave forms.
