Abstract

O período de 1999 a 2001 foi marcado pela crise de energia elétrica, com blecaute e racionamento de energia. O permanente risco de faltar energia, a alta possibilidade de blecaute e a incerteza de custo levaram as grandes empresas a buscarem soluções energéticas alternativas. Oportunidade de utilização de combustíveis residuais dos processos produtivos da V&M do Brasil (Gás de Alto Forno e Alcatrão Vegetal) aliada à crise de energia motivou a construção de uma unidade de cogeração. A construção da Usina Termelétrica Barreiro (UTE Barreiro) teve início neste período de crise, entrando em operação comercial em fevereiro de 2004, com um fornecimento de uma energia limpa e segura que corresponde a 30% da necessidade da empresa. O projeto envolveu uma parceria muito importante, a V & M do Brasil cedeu o terreno, fornece os combustíveis e outros insumos e consome toda energia gerada e a CEMIG responde pelo investimento, operação e manutenção.
