Abstract
The VAI-CON® Temp continuous temperature measurement system by VOEST-ALPINE Industrieanlagenbau (VAI) is used to measure the temperature of the melt in an AOD converter through a submerged tuyere. The temperature measuring system is easily installed and is characterized by trouble-free and maintenance-free operation. The VAI-CON® Temp measurement is based on the emission of infrared radiation from the steel bath. For test purposes, the VAI-CON® Temp system was compared with manual thermocouple measurements in order to detect effects of the steel composition on the optical measurement. However, the varying concentration of alloying elements has no effect on the accuracy of the VAI-CON® Temp measurements. An average difference of only 0.3°C and a standard deviation of 5.1°C between the thermocouple and VAI-CON® Temp measurements proves the accuracy and reliability of the VAI-CON® Temp measurements. Optimized temperature control during the entire process as well as the exact adjustment of the tapping temperature without interruption of the process itself are some of the benefits of VAI-CON® Temp. Cost savings achieved through lower gas consumption, less refractory wear and shorter tap-to-tap times. These benefits outweigh the low investment costs of the VAI-CON® Temp system.
