Abstract
Direct-linked casting and rolling processes offer superior economic benefits in comparison to conventional batch-based processes. Therefore they are the prime option for new capacities as well as for process improvement projects. The economical advantages as generated from reductions in process steps, equipment and production time result in savings of investment, manning and energy. Based on these principal facts and accelerated by dropping sales prices for hot and cold rolled band, the number of such plants are steadily increasing. The paper discusses optimum casting thickness, design features of medium slab casters and rolling mills, implementation of medium thin slab technology, backwards integration concepts, practical examples at AK Steel Mansfield and ANSHAN Group, and future trends including strip casting technology and UTHS production.
