Abstract
The rolling of ultrathin hot strip (<1.2 mm) makes it possible to use hot band as a substitute for cold-rolled material. There has already been a considerable demand for thin hot band on the market since it can be produced at a cheaper price in modem minimills, leading to a substantial advantage for the consurners. Conventional hot-rolling mills are restricted in produang ultrathin strip due to certain mill limits, reduced throughput and increased operating costs. Therefore, certain measures have to be taken to extend the profitable hot band production towards thinner gauges. The paper gives an overview of the critical issues ansing when rolling thin gauge and desuibes the solutions developed at VAI to overcome these problems, fowsing rnainly on the topics of strip quality imnprovement, advanced control systerns and improved or additional equiprnent for continuous rolling.
