Abstract

The paper presents VIS®, a new type of carbide-enhanced graphitic cast iron work roll developed by ESW to replace conventional Indefinite Chill (ICDP) rolls in flat product hot rolling. After more than 3 years of use in over 50 mills, VIS rolls have demonstrated superior performance: 15–40% higher tonnage, improved surface quality, lower wear, and resistance to cracking in hot strip, CSP, ISP, Steckel, and plate mills. Especially in stainless steel rolling, VIS rolls enabled longer campaigns, reduced grinding, and eliminated the need for further surface finishing. VIS now represents 65% of ESW’s ICDP roll orders.
