WHY CHOOSE IRON CARBIDE FOR ELECTRIC ARC FURNACE FEEDSTOCK?

Abstract

The use of scrap substitutes to augment scrap as a raw material for electric arc furnaces and as a coolant for Basic Oxygen Furnaces is becoming more important as high quality scrap prices have increased and supplies have dwindled. Several technologies have produced DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) and HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron) to provide a material that will enhance quality and allow the production of high quality rolled plate and coil steel. Iron Carbide, with its high carbon content and stable form, is superior to the other forms of reduced iron in its ability to produce a high quality steel with less cost in shorter time, with better quality, and production from existing facilities. As the worldwide steel demand increases, the need to produce substantial quantities of scrap substitutes will be necessary to meet the requirements of new third world installations of electric arc furnaces. The production of a superior material to serve this requirement, in the form of Iron Carbide, is the best economical solution to the shortage of high quality scrap.
