Abstract
The packaging of flat rolled steel products has historically been an expensive hit or miss process. Very little innovation has occurred over the last twenty years, and as a result packaging specifications are often decided by demanding customers or internal packaging committees. Efforts to make packaging functional and simple are usually met with na arsenal of interna1 and external negativity. Upper management faced with the difficulty of making profits in an industry that is on the wrong side of the supply and demand curve, has maintained a "do as the customer wants as cheaply as possible" attitude. Stretch film has created the possibility of developing uniform packaging standards that meet customer needs for affective packaging and management's desire to preserve precious capital. Stretch film is the first packaging medium that allows for automatic labor free packaging of flat rolled steel. It is rapidly gaining acceptance by both manufacturers and customers in many key steel markets. Its promise is one of package uniformity combined with labor savings to enable the steel industry to reduce costs, and increase customer satisfaction.
