Abstract
The “Zero-Waste Project” has been conducted since 1992 to minimize the landfill disposal of industrial wastes at Mizushima Works of Kawasaki Steel. The goal of the project is to maximize the rate of recycling of by-products and other used materials hopefully upto 100%. After surveying of the fundamental problems at Mizushima Works, the project concentrated its efforts on the recycling of steelmaking slag, sludge and dust, and other wastes such as brick and concrete block. Since the result of these efforts was very successful in reducing wastes consigned to the landfill, the amount of waste send to the landfill in 1998 was only 6% of that in 1991, which is less than 0.05% of total by-product generated in Mizushima Works. The current challenge is to achieve “Zero-Waste” through the efforts of both developing the recycling technologies and reducing waste generation in respective processes.
