42º Seminário de Redução de Minério de Ferro e Matérias-primas / 13º Seminário Brasileiro de Minério de Ferro / 6th International Congress on the Science and Technology of Ironmaking

vol. 6, num.6 (2012) — Event part of the ABM 2012

About

On the verge of the eighteenth ICSTI birthday, Latin America, particularly Brazil, is deeply honored to host the 6th International Congress on the Science and Technology of Ironmaking, during October 14th to 18th, 2012, at Rio de Janeiro.

It’s just fair to remember the success of the previous events, started in Sendai (Japan, 1994)and, after, held in Toronto (Canada, 1998), Dusseldorf (Germany, 2003), Osaka (Japan, 2006) and Shanghai (China, 2009).

In the fi nal years of the past century, focusing the period encompassed by the 1st and 2nd ICSTI, the world lived a broad period of monotonous steel production stability. In those two years, the world crude steel production were 725.1 Mt and 776.9 Mt, respectively. Aftermath, at the onset of the 21st century, began the well-known accelerated steel production, which led to a tonnage of 1,512.2 Mt, in 2011, in spite of the serious watershed posed by the 2008 / 2009 fi nancial crisis and the one we are living today. Economic development experienced mainly in Asia and other BRICS countries are, however, asserting this high world production. Nowadays, the technological challenges facing the ironmaking link of the steel production chain are not few, and continue to be centered in higher competitiveness, productivity in a sustainable development basis, energy effi ciency, CO2 emissions control, alternative raw materials, biomasses usage, waste and pollutants abating, recycling, environmental concerns, adaptability and, last but not least, the scientifi c and technological creativity at large, thus hosting innovations for the ironmaking sector. We feel that the moment is now!

The 6th ICSTI will for sure provide a fertile ground to debate and to achieve outcomes to face those ironmaking challenges. Meeting this, almost 300 Papers, 15 Keynotes and 9 Plenary sections will be presented. These communications will treat essentially fundamental issues, encompassing physical-chemistry, kinetics, morphologies, mathematical models, transport phenomena, etc., and technical matters, including traditional and alternative raw materials, biomasses, conventional technologies, emergent processes and environmental addresses in ironmaking. It is worth to mention that, for the fi rst time, an ICSTI event will include invited speeches, technical sessions and panels addressing Direct Reduction and Charcoal ironmaking technologies.

ICSTI 2012 conference will be held jointly with the traditional 42nd ABM Ironmaking Seminar and the 13rd ABM Iron Ore Symposium, both annually organized by the Brazilian Association for Metallurgy, Materials and Mining – ABM, one of the oldest and reputed scientifi c and technical societies in the country. These three assemblies are sponsored by the principal Brazilian mining, steelworks and metallurgy companies, particularly VALE, the conference company host, and also counting with the special support from PUC Rio University and the Governmental Funding Agencies CAPES and FAPERJ.

Motivated by the 18 years of ICSTI success, for the fi rst time a well deserved HONOR CITATION will be granted to one of our colleagues, being indicated Prof. Jung-Ichiro Yagi, Dr. Eng. and Professor Emeritus of Tohoku University, Japan, for his undeniable professional competence, devotion to science and technology of ironmaking and also to his Japanese roots, country where ICSTI was conceived and born in the nineties.

In the name of the 6th ICSTI Executive Committee I would like to thank all members of the National and International Committee for their valuable aid, the ABM Directory Board and its competent technical staff , for the event’s organization and dedication, the sponsor Companies, particularly VALE, the Meeting Company host, the Governmental Agencies CAPES and FAPERJ and the Academic Institutions, represented by PUC-Rio, for their valuable cooperation and support. Finally, to all attendees, for their presentations and pro-active participations in the debates and exchange ideas, I transmit my sincere gratitude.
