Abstract

Sampling of molten steel for hydrogen determination is difficult since hydrogen can easily be lost or picked up during the sampling procedure. With the Hydris immersion probe system the melt hydrogen content can be measured on the floor within one minute and no sample needs to be taken. The system offers better process control possibilities since enough time is left for taking appropriate action to correct the hydrogen content. As evaluation of the measurement may be fully automated, "operator variable" problems associated with the conventional sampling techniques are avoided. In this paper the measuring principle and design of disposable probe and instrumentation are discussed. The Hydris system is being used for about one year at different steelshops. Some typical tundish and ladle applications are presented as well as the results obtained in comparison with laboratory analysis. Prospects on future sensors with a similar technique are discussed.
