The strain energy release rate is one of the most important parameter in fracture mechanics. It represents the energy required for a unitary crack advance and can predict the direction of the crack extension using the maximum strain energy release rate criterion. However the accuracy of this criterion depends on the accuracy of the numerical method used to compute the strain energy release rate. We present here the Gθ method which is based on a surface integral around the crack tip. We show the accuracy of this method as well as its extension to crack velocity computation. Once the crack direction has been predicted, we propagate the crack in the mesh using an advanced remeshing technique. Examples of crack propagation as well as comparisons with other criteria are presented to check the robustness and accuracy of our technique.
