AISI 316L steel is crucial in the chemical and biomedical industries. However, even after hot processing and solution annealing, it retains heterogeneities and delta ferrite that compromise its performance. There is a gap regarding the systematic relationship between different cold reduction degrees and post-annealing microstructural evolution. This work investigated the effect of plastic deformation on the microstructure of this steel. Three cold rolling routes (1.5%, 9.1%, and 21.9%) were applied, followed by annealing at 1,080 °C. The effects were evaluated via simulations (DEFORM/Thermo-Calc), microscopy, ferritoscope, and hardness tests. The effective strain magnitude proved critical. The 1.5% route operated in a subcritical regime, causing only recovery and grain growth, evidenced by a hardness drop. Conversely, the 9.1% and 21.9% reductions accumulated sufficient energy to overcome delta ferrite pinning (Zener pinning) and promote grain refinement, associated with the activation of primary recrystallization. It is concluded that the 21.9% route is the most suitable for obtaining a refined (~22 µm) and thickness-homogeneous microstructure, mitigating pre-existing morphological heterogeneities.
