The electrochemical hydrogen permeation technique has been used to investigate hydrogen transport and trapping characteristics on two carbon steels proposed for the Yucca Mountain (YM) repository. The results show that, in rock bolt carbon steel (RBCS) the effective diffusivity was reduced by a factor of 5 compared to steel sets carbon steel (SSCS). This is attributed to the high C, Mn and S of the former steel than the later. The results also show that the above elements induce more hydrogen trapping that caused delay in hydrogen transport in carbon steels. The severity of YM simulated repository environment on the hydrogen absorption was determined by increasing the ground water compositions (1x, 10x and 100x). These results indicate a decrease in hydrogen absorption with increasing electrolyte concentrations. That was due to the formation of CaCO₃ as revealed by XRD analysis.
