BaTiO₃ was obtained by cold pressing - solid state reaction method, from commercial, P.A. grade reagents. Several problems were found during fabrication leading to inhomogeneous grain size distribution. The fracture toughness K_IC was evaluated by the indentation fracture method (IF), while the hardness was measured through the Vickers method. Although the dispersion of the results obtained by the IF method was high, a value for K_IC of 0.71 MPa(m)^0.5 was obtained, which is within the expected limits. A hardness value of 4.33 GPa was also found.
