Quenching technology has advanced greatly over the last 25 years. However, integration of the fundamental understanding of this ancient technology has been relatively slow, if it has been integrated at all. This is evident in various places such as in heat treating and metallurgy textbooks, standards development and industrial process design. In this paper, the importance of physical properties of liquid quenchants on process heat transfer which will include identification, measurement and quantification of the basic surface rewetting process, discuss the “problem” of Newtonian vs Non-Newtonian heat transfer, quantification of agitation and a detailed discussion of the importance of agitation and appropriate methods of measurement in a production environment is discussed.
