This study aims to investigate the effect of Fe2+ ions on the phase formation behavior, especially on the complex calcium ferrite phase (SFCA, Silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminum) in the progress of sintering. Magnetite was used as a source of Fe2+ ions and typical sinter compositions with different magnetite content were targeted. Confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM) was employed to simulate the sintering condition and constitutional analyses were carried out by applying EPMA sweeping area analysis method. Since the structure of SFCA is believed to have aenigmatite type structure, the correlation between magnetite content in sinter mix and SFCA formation behavior were investigated based on 2(Fe, Al)3+ <=> (Ca, Fe)2+ + Si4+, the expected substitution mechanism in aenigmatite group. The results show that the addition of some amount of magnetite to the normal sintering condition can enhance the SFCA formation.
