This article presents a way to estimate the significance of independent variables in industrial processes, by means of system identification, mapped by Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in order to establish a methodology that will contribute in the field of input-output relationships of metallurgical processes. Multilayer feedforward ANN architecture is employed in this work with Hyperbolic Tangent activation function in the intermediate layer and Linear in output layer. The Levenberg-Marquardt (backpropagation), Descendent Gradient algorithms and technique of cross-validation are employed for training / learning. The first stage of the study is the analysis of mapping, using RNAs, for functions that simulate the processes by synthetic data. The sensitivities obtained for the synthetic variables were consistent with the errors generated at the outputs when variables were considered nonexistent in the process, which characterized the good performance for the proposed technique. The next stage is the application of the technique in the mapping of hot rolling C-Mn Steel, by means of empirical data. The results guide through the critical process variables analyzed.
