INVESTIGATIONS OF THE REACTION KINETICS OF TORREFIED BIOMASS FOR METALLURGICAL APPLICATIONS

Resumo

In the metallurgical process of iron making two reduction gases are required: CO and H2. Beneath coke different auxiliary matter can be used. Pulverized coal injection technology (PCI) for blast furnace is state-of-the-art. But due to the fossil origin of coal, the netto CO2 emissions are high. The torrefaction process of biomass like wood is a way to produce new auxiliary matter. This process is carried out under mild pyrolysis conditions with temperatures under 350°C and low heating rates. The product can be classified as a CO2-neutral, power-saving reducing agent e.g. for the blast furnace. The application of renewable reducing agents in the raceway of the blast furnace depends on their reaction kinetics. The molecular structure of torrefied biomass is different compared to charcoals or fossil coals. To investigate the gasification kinetics of different types of biomass, torrefied at different process temperature ranges in comparison to pulverized coal (PC), charcoal (CC) and coke, several experiments were carried out with a tube furnace in different atmospheres. To compare the gasification behavior of torrefied biomass with PC under conditions of a blast furnace raceway, several experiments were carried out with a laboratory rig at the RWTH Aachen University that simulates the behavior of fine dusts injected in a raceway.
