Abstract

In recent decades the steel industry has achieved technological advances in Blast Furnace process in order to reduce cost, increase productivity and decrease greenhouse gases. This work show the main steps made to reduce the metallurgical coke consumption in the Blast Furnace 2 of Aperam South America by using a material with low market cost. The material chosen for this project was the small charcoal because it is a charcoal suitable for the size range required for loading with iron burden. Besides cost, this material has others advantages such as preservation of hearth coke due to higher reactivity of charcoal that contributes to permeability of the reactor. Another positive point was the reduction in emission of carbon dioxide into atmosphere because the charcoal is from reforested wood. These facts have contributed to reduce Hot Metal cost and for a better working stability and performance of the reactor.
