Abstract

The behavior of the ferrous burden in the cohesive zone of blast furnaces can be studied through the softening and melting test apparatus available in Ferrous Technology Center (CTF) at Vale S.A. This equipment can reproduce the thermodynamics conditions, gas composition and temperature, that the ferrous burden is subjected within the blast furnace, obtaining information about high temperature properties like pressure loss in cohesive zone, temperatures of the starting and end of melting, and so on. The knowledge of these parameters is essential to improve and guide the development of high performance ferrous burden for blast furnaces. This work has the main purpose to evaluate the impacts of variations of the amounts of MgO, Al2O3, CaO and SiO2 on the high temperature properties of iron ore sinters as well as the effect of using different proportions of iron ore pellets as a constituent of the ferrous burden. To do this, sinters were produced on a pilot scale plant in different chemical compositions and subsequently tested in mixed burdens with Vale’s industrial pellets.
