Abstract

Saving energy and reducing pollution are key policy worldwide. Coking industry must improve its technology and equipment to cope with environmental protection guidelines which are becoming more and more stringent. In this scenario, Paul Wurth has put into operation the new coke oven battery “1-E” at Sumitomo Metal Industries Steel Works in Kashima - Japan. The most modern design tools and equipment were adopted in order to offer the best technological results in terms of emissions control. The new battery “1-E” consists of 40 ovens producing 494.000 t/a of coke. The first coke was successfully pushed on October 18th 2011. The project incorporates a number of innovative technical features to improve the environment, to maximize the coke production rate and to ensure the best coke quality. The combustion system has been designed with the aid of advanced CFD methods in order to minimize NOx emissions and to achieve an optimum heat distribution. Performance tests have been successfully performed both for mixed gas and coke oven gas feeding.
