Abstract
Coasting analysis in belt conveyor systems is the analysis of the stopping time in normal and emergency operation conditions, and its consequence for the operating of the complete system (conveyor and transfer chute). The conveyor system should be designed so that, when the system shuts down under normal or emergency stop conditions the chutes do not plug. If chute plugging cannot be avoided, then the transfer chute must be considered as a hopper, and designed accordingly. Design must then make allowance for plugged chute restarts. In the conventional analysis the calculation is performed using the total volume of the transfer chute, giving incorrect information, because the chute can plug even if the particles do not fill the entire volume of the chute. In this work it is presented a methodology for coasting analysis using the Discrete Element Method. All transfer chutes in a complete line of belt conveyors are analyzed in cascade. This methodology gives good information for the configuration of the transfer chute design and for the belt conveyor control strategy.
